Trump Brags About Threatening Canada With Tariffs

Trump called making Canada the 51st state, “an interesting statement”

Trump, at a speech at the Fox Nation Patriot Awards on Wednesday, bragged about his recent threat toward Canada in which he threatened a 25% tariff on the country. Trump claimed the tariff threat led Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to "fly right in" to meet with him, boasting that it was "just the beginning" of his threats.

After Trump mentioned Canada, the audience—comprised largely of Fox News personalities—chanted “51,” a reference to Trump’s past remark to Justin Trudeau that Canada could become the 51st state of the United States. Trump appeared to indulge in the chant, calling it “an interesting statement.”

The suggestion that Canada could somehow become the 51st state is not only unrealistic but also deeply disrespectful to Canadian sovereignty. It’s hard to imagine how Trump’s encouragement of annexing Canada, absorbing an entire sovereign nation with its own identity, government, and culture into the United States, is supposed to help the relationship between the two countries.

Trump recently posted a picture of himself looking into Canada as if to consider annexation. (However, the photo he used was Switzerland). Trump’s encouragement of this rhetoric bolsters an absurd narrative that undermines diplomatic relations, reduces international politics to childish bravado, and disregards the complex reality of cross-border relationships. In other words, it makes Trump look like a clown.
