Luna Calls for House Sgt at Arms to Arrest Garland 10 Days After Contempt
With performance theater the name of the game for House Republicans, it seems that every day each of them feels compelled to go one step further into Crazyland to get the coveted invites on Fox and Newsmax.
Yesterday's ridiculous House Oversight Committee hearing to hold Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress had to be delayed until the evening since many of the Republican members wanted to put on a spectacle outside Donald Trump's criminal trial in New York. That included one of their leading angertainment specialists, new Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna.
During her rant yesterday while getting heckled by bystanders, Luna created a new word in "retainered":
That rant accomplished the mission for the day, which was to land a primetime Fox segment, which she proudly promoted on twitter.
When the Oversight Hearing finally convened, it quickly turned into a clown show with Chairman James Comer unable to control the classless foolishness of his members, who hurled personal insults at Democrats on the committee, who ended up giving it back better than they got. You can read about that here and watch clips of the lowlights:
The hearing is about an attempt to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of court for refused to turn over audiotapes of President Biden's interviews with the Special Counsel in his documents investigations. House Republicans already have a complete transcript with findings, but they want to comb audio tapes for any embarrassing moments they can find for Trump to use in his presidential campaign.
With a razor-thin Republican majority with a handful of Members who still have half a brain, it seems unlikely that the House is going to try to move something forward like this which would be challenged in the courts and drag out for months anyway. But that is not going to stop people like Luna for using this spectacle for their own political benefit.
Last night, Luna said that 10 days after the contempt of Congress motions passes, she will introduce a resolution to compel the House Sergeant at Arms to go over to the Department of Justice building and arrest the Attorney General of the United States. Here she is giving part of her speech about it.
