'Kavanaugh on Steroids': GOP Senators Warn Gaetz About Blistering Upcoming Hearing
Republican Senators have been meeting with Matt Gaetz this week regarding his nomination for Attorney General, and have reportedly been warning him about submitting himself to confirmation hearings in the U.S. Senate where he would be forced to testify about the serious allegations against him, including sex trafficking of minors and illicit drug use.
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) told reporters he believed the Gaetz hearings would be like "Kavanaugh on steroids," referring to the fiery senate hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh regarding his allegations of sexual assault, that nearly sank the nomination.
Several GOP senators have been attempting to get Gaetz to withdraw his nomination, rather than submit himself and the party to the scrutiny that will come from an open hearing process, especially if the votes aren't there for confirmation.
"The most humane way not only to Mr. Gaetz but to the dignity of our process, the best thing to do is to convince the president that the votes aren’t there, regardless of his strong-arming, and Gaetz can decide it’s not his to fight for," one anonymous senator said.
The House Ethics Committee voted Wednesday to not release its report on Gaetz prior to his senate confirmation, which several senators had requested. Gaetz resigned from his house seat immediately upon his nomination to A.G. by president-elect Donald Trump, forcing an end to the house committee's investigation.
Gaetz said he was looking forward to the hearings and that he had enjoyed meeting with senators to make his case for confirmation.
"Senators have been giving me a lot of good advice. I'm looking forward to a hearing. Folks have been very supportive, and they've been saying we are going to get a fair process so it's a great day of momentum for the Trump-Vance administration," Gaetz said.
Meanwhile, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee have formally requested the complete evidentiary file of the FBI's closed investigation of Gaetz from Director Christopher Wray.
Gaetz is accused of paying minors for sex via platforms like Venmo and PayPal, including payments through his adopted son, Nestor’s, accounts. At one point Gaetz reportedly even brought his underaged girls to Manhattan to watch him do live tapings of interviews on Fox News, and then took to them to see the Broadway play Pretty Woman.
Though Republicans may be working on Gaetz to withdraw his name to avoid a contentious hearing, it is worth noting that no amount of pressure from his own party could get Gaetz to call off his war on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, leading to the former Speaker's ouster. It would appear Gaetz is immune from the concept of shame, if history is any guide.
