Gen-Z Recognizes the Cognitive Decline of Donald Trump. Why can’t the Republican Party?
Once again, it is imperative to emphasize: Donald Trump's manifestation of dementia symptoms cannot be overlooked. As a member of Generation Z, I am deeply troubled by the presidential candidacy of an individual clearly exhibiting cognitive decline as the Republican Party's primary nominee. It is incumbent upon us as a nation to uphold elevated standards. Our collective destiny hinges on prosperity and the confidence we bestow upon leaders to steer us with unwavering dedication and foresight. However, such dedication and foresight are compromised when a leading presidential candidate lacks perceptiveness—as exemplified by the time Donald Trump stared directly into a solar eclipse, symbolizing a glaring inability to discern clearly.
We need a leader whose cognitive abilities we don't question. Donald Trump has repeatedly referenced President Joe Biden as former President Barack Obama, raising uncertainty. It's unclear whether he believes Barack Obama is still the current president or if he mistook an 81-year-old white man for a 62-year-old Black man. Regardless, such behavior from someone seeking the presidency is deeply concerning.
The concern extends further; Donald Trump not only referred to Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi as former Ambassador Nikki Haley, but went as far as claiming that Nikki Haley was in charge of security during the U.S. Capitol siege on January 6, 2021. This wasn't an isolated incident; he confused the two women four times in one speech. It's worth noting that he worked with both individuals in entirely separate capacities for multiple years, yet he was unable to distinguish between them.
It's critical that our country, particularly the conservative base that resides within it, recognizes that Donald Trump is facing cognitive impairment and displaying signs of early dementia. This is something his own father, Fred Trump, was diagnosed with at the age of 87, just ten years older than Donald Trump is now.
Consider the following facts: Donald Trump struggled to lift a glass of water with one hand, requiring both hands to avoid spilling it. Declining ability to perform daily tasks like drinking water may indicate cognitive decline, as do changes in mood and behavior, such as exhibiting mood swings or becoming easily agitated, as seen when Donald Trump threw dishes and plates of ketchup against a White House wall.
Furthermore, believing that one resembles a celebrity despite lacking any physical resemblance could also be a sign of dementia. Recently, Donald Trump compared himself to a young Elvis Presley, even going as far as showing a photo comparison of the two men, which clearly demonstrates no resemblance; a 77-year-old Donald Trump compared himself to a 42-year-old Elvis Presley. While one might believe he was simply joking, he has referred to himself as a look-alike to Elvis Presley on more than one occasion, dating back to 2018.
As a country, we cannot afford to sit idly by and wait for one of Donald Trump’s doctors, who might have personal investments in his health, to step up and diagnose him with cognitive decline — a diagnosis that could end his presidential campaign. We are witnessing the swift incline of his symptoms, and we recognize his family history of dementia. We must make our message to Donald Trump clear: He should not be seeking another four years in the presidency; rather, he should be seeking four years of treatment to slow down the progression of his symptoms.
Moreover, our directive to media entities like the New York Times, which disseminated not one, not two, but three articles propagating rumors and erroneous narratives regarding President Biden's mental well-being in one day alone, should be unequivocal: History unfolds before us unaltered. We have two presidential contenders: former President Donald Trump exhibits alarming indications of cognitive deterioration, while President Biden consistently demonstrates his suitability as a leader for our era.
