Matt Gaetz Wants Congress to "Immunize" Trump from Prosecutions
Various members of the MAGA intelligencia continue to make the rounds on right-wing shows and podcasts to dish out hopium to the Trump cultists with a variety of hair-brained solutions to save their hero from accountability for his crimes.
On Charlie Kirk's show today, Matt Gaetz claimed that Congress has the power to grant immunity to witnesses who appear before them, and that is what the GOP majority should do to save Trump.
Gaetz had a very brief and mediocre career as a practicing lawyer before his wealthy and politically connected father helped him buy a seat in Congress. He was even briefly suspended by the Florida Bar for failing to pay bar dues. But that lack of expertise sure doesn't prevent him from creating novel legal theories in the mind behind that towering forehead.
On Charlie Kirk's show today, Gaetz outlined his theory of how House Republicans can save Trump: "You can actually bring Trump in to give testimony before Congress, and in doing so immunize him." Then Gaetz laid out the plan for how this would supposedly work:
"Speaker McCarthy could set up a special select committee tomorrow that could bring Trump in and immunize him"
Gaetz then floated a conspiracy that Jack Smith waited to indict Trump right before Congress went into recess to prevent them from being able to do this right away. "I think the timing is on purpose ... right as Congress is leaving town you see this acceleration of activity against Trump."
Even Charlie Kirk had a hard time buying this one, asking Gaetz to clarify if he was actually saying that this scheme could give Trump immunity from being prosecuted for the crimes he has already been indicted for, and asked Gaetz to give examples of when this has ever been done before. Gaetz responded, "It hasn't."
This is all just more hot air from Gaetz. When Congress votes to give immunity to a witness, that only prevents prosecutors from using that subsequent testimony before Congress against him in criminal court. That is not anything that is going to save Trump, and even Gaetz knows that.
This is just the latest stunt by Gaetz to throw out something sensational and preposterous for attention, while he continues to work towards the Newsmax primetime host career that he covets so badly.
It is also another way to get MAGA conspiracy theorists to start bugging Kevin McCarthy to do something he can't and won't do. I'm sure Gaetz also knows that, and loves it.
