FL House Committee Passes Ban on Pride & BLM Flags in Classrooms

The War on Teachers continues in Florida

As property and car insurance in Florida continue spiraling out of control to crush people around the state with no end in sight, and affordable housing remains difficult to find as Florida leads the nation in inflation, Republicans in the legislature are laser focused on banning Pride and BLM flags.

Rep. David Borrero filed HB-901, which would prohibit the display of any non-governmental flags or symbols from being displayed on government property, which includes "public schools, colleges and universities." The bill specifically bans flags which "represent a political viewpoint, including politically partisan, racial, sexual orientation and gender ..." The bill is clearly targeted at Pride and BLM flags that have become popular for many teachers to display in their classrooms along with other flags.

The bill passed through its first committee today with a party line 9-5 vote, with every Democrat on the committee voting against.

This new legislation is the latest move from a state dominated by Desantis's culture wars targeting teachers as "groomers" and accusing them of secretly teaching "CRT" to students. All of this has resulted in a serious teacher shortage in the state. In addition to having one of the lowest pay scales for teachers in the country, many who have left the profession have cited new laws like the 'Parental Rights in Education Bill' and the 'Stop Woke Act' which bans certain books and changed how slavery and African-American history is taught.

The bill will have have one more committee to pass through before it goes to the House floor for a vote.
