Biggest Newspaper in Puerto Rico Endorses Kamala Harris
Puerto Rico's largest newspaper, El Nueva Dia, has endorsed Kamala Harris for president in a fiery rebuke of Donald Trump, following a speaker at Trump's rally in New York City calling Puerto Rico a "floating island of garbage."
Editor Maria Luisa Ferre Rangel called Trump "cowardly" and a "narcissist" in her endorsement, and stated that Trump suffers from "psychopathic elements." Ferre Rangel also reminded Trump and the Republicans of the political power of Puerto Ricans, with five million Puerto Ricans who live in the United States and vote, often in swing states.
Ferre Rangel wrote:
The endorsement went on to state that Vice President Harris, "directly addresses Puerto Rico's pressing emergencies. She will continue several programs already established by the Joe Biden administration, such as the federal task force that manages island issues in a coordinated manner, reporting directly to the White House. This effort has succeeded in breaking through the bureaucracy that prevented access to damage mitigation funds and grants for crucial reconstruction and infrastructure modernization projects."
"All those who feel insulted, discriminated against and offended should exercise their vote in favor of Kamala Harris because, although we may not fully know all aspects of the candidate due to the fact that she entered the race three months before the election, she was courageous enough to step forward and accept the challenge," the endorsement continued. "Her speech has not been one of hate. On the contrary, it is one of inclusion."
Puerto Rico does not have electoral votes, but Puerto Ricans are American citizens and Puerto Ricans living in the continental U.S. can vote for president. Half a million Puerto Ricans live in battleground Pennsylvania. Over a million Puerto Ricans live in Florida.
