At Mar-a-Lago, Mel Gibson Implies Trump’s Political Opponents Started California Fire
During a speech at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday night, actor Mel Gibson implied that California wildfires might be deliberately set by political opponents of Donald Trump. Gibson stated:
"…4 years of thinly veiled Marxism, and, you know, now I think what we have is a four-year grace period. But we have to work hard for all of it. And I don’t know. The president’s got a big job on his hands to turn this place around. A lot of damage was done, and they continue to start fires, like around my house..."
Gibson also praised former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and referred to Trump’s potential second term as a "four-year grace period" from what he described as Marxist policies. Flynn associates himself with fringe MAGA personalities who push conspiracies.
The comments come against a backdrop of devastating wildfires in Malibu, California, which have scorched thousands of acres and destroyed homes. Gibson’s claims mirror baseless conspiracy theories and detract from the real causes of these disasters.
Gibson’s presence at Mar-a-Lago and his endorsement of Trump raise serious questions about the former president’s associations. Gibson’s history is riddled with controversy. He was infamously caught on tape berating his ex-girlfriend with vile, racist language, suggesting she would be sexually assaulted by “[n-words]” for her clothing choices.
Additionally, Gibson has a long-documented history of anti-Semitic remarks, including a drunken tirade in 2006 which he claimed that Jews are responsible for “all the wars in the world.”
Variety and other outlets have questioned why Gibson remains a figure in Hollywood, given his track record of racist and anti-Semitic statements. His reemergence in the political sphere, particularly at an event for Trump, underscores the problematic alliances and endorsements that have come to define Trump’s MAGA movement..
At a time when the nation faces deepening political and social divisions, figures like Gibson serve only to inflame tensions. Trump’s willingness to align himself with such a polarizing and discredited figure casts further doubt on his judgment and the values of his movement.
